The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) is a database containing information about the men who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. Other information on the site includes histories of Union and Confederate regiments, links to descriptions of significant battles, and selected lists of prisoner-of-war records and cemetery records, which will be amended over time. Please note that the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System contains just an index of the men who served in the Civil War with only rudimentary information from the service records (including name, rank and unit in which they served) The full service records are housed at the National Archives and Records Administration.
Note: These Service Records are collected in an envelope labeled with each soldier's name, rank, and unit. The envelope typically contains cards with abstracts of entries pertaining to the soldier and regarding muster rolls (roll calls), rosters, payrolls, appointment books, hospital registers, Union prison registers and rolls, parole rolls, and inspection reports.
The Medal of Honor traces its inception to the Civil War by an act of Congress signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on December 21, 1861. As the only military award authorized during the American Civil War, the Medal of Honor was presented for meritorious actions that would not necessarily be recognized by the Armed Services today.
